Vajrapani Thangka — Chagdor, the Bodhisattva of Power
Vajrapani (Tibetan: Chagdor, “Vajra Holder”) is one of the Three Family Protectors of Tibetan Buddhism — alongside Manjushri (wisdom) and Avalokiteshvara (compassion) — embodying the power and energy of all Buddhas. Dark blue and wrathful, he wields the vajra (indestructible thunderbolt) that destroys ignorance, obstacles, and the forces of Mara. In his peaceful form he is a gentle bodhisattva; in his wrathful form he is one of the most potent protective deities in the Vajrayana tradition. Vajrapani is invoked for protection against physical and spiritual harm, for the removal of obstacles, and for the empowerment of tantric practice.
Which Form to Choose
- Wrathful Vajrapani (Chagdor) → the most common thangka form — dark blue, standing in alidha posture, right hand raised with vajra, left hand in tarjani mudra, adorned with serpent ornaments. For protection practice and obstacle removal.
- Peaceful Vajrapani → seated bodhisattva form, holding a lotus with vajra — for general devotion and as part of the Three Family Protectors altar.
- Vajrapani with Garuda and Nagaraja → a composite protective composition invoking power over serpent spirits and disease — for healing and naga-related obstacle removal.
- For a Three Family Protectors altar → pair with Manjushri and Avalokiteshvara thangkas for a complete wisdom-compassion-power shrine.
Features of Vajrapani Thangka
Gandhanra Vajrapani thangkas depict Chagdor in his principal wrathful form: dark blue body, standing in alidha posture (right leg extended, left bent) on a sun disc and lotus, right hand raised holding the golden vajra, left hand in tarjani (threatening) mudra at the hip, adorned with serpent ornaments at the crown, neck, wrists, and ankles, wearing a tiger-skin loincloth, surrounded by flames of wisdom fire. Available compositions include the solitary wrathful Chagdor, the peaceful seated bodhisattva form, and the composite Vajrapani-Garuda-Nagaraja protective triad. All compositions follow the Himalayan lineage iconographic canon as transmitted through Tibetan and Nepalese ateliers. Each thangka is giclee printed from a high-resolution master scan of original mineral-pigment artwork, with archival pigment inks delivering museum-grade color fidelity. Every print is hand framed in traditional silk brocade, ready to hang at a shrine or altar.
How to Use Vajrapani Thangka
Place your Vajrapani thangka on a protection shrine or bodhisattva altar, elevated and facing the room. For wrathful Vajrapani, position at the entrance or protector corner to guard the space. Recite the Vajrapani mantra (OM VAJRAPANI HUM) 21 or 108 times daily to invoke protection, remove obstacles, and empower tantric practice. Vajrapani is particularly invoked for protection against spirit harm, physical danger, and obstacles to practice. For a complete Three Family Protectors shrine, pair with Manjushri (wisdom) and Avalokiteshvara (compassion) thangkas. For the Vajrapani-Garuda-Nagaraja form, recite the combined mantra for naga-related illness and obstacle removal. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve the giclee print and silk brocade framing.
Why Choose Handmade Vajrapani Thangka
Vajrapani’s wrathful form requires precise iconographic rendering — correct alidha posture, vajra angle, tarjani mudra, serpent ornaments, and flame aureole — to be ritually effective. Gandhanra sources Vajrapani compositions from Tibetan and Nepalese ateliers with documented Himalayan lineage transmission, ensuring full iconographic authenticity across all three principal forms: wrathful Chagdor, peaceful bodhisattva, and the Vajrapani-Garuda-Nagaraja triad. Giclee printing with archival inks captures the full luminosity and tonal depth of the original mineral-pigment and gold-line artwork. Hand framing in traditional silk brocade by skilled craftspeople means each thangka arrives altar-ready. Every piece passes a final quality check for iconographic accuracy and print clarity before worldwide shipping.
