Manjushri Thangka — Jampalyang, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom
Manjushri (Tibetan: Jampalyang) is the Bodhisattva of Wisdom — one of the Three Family Protectors of Tibetan Buddhism alongside Avalokiteshvara (compassion) and Vajrapani (power). Golden-yellow and serene, he wields the flaming sword of discriminating wisdom in his right hand — the sword that cuts through ignorance, conceptual obscurations, and the root of cyclic existence — and holds the Prajnaparamita sutra on a lotus in his left. Manjushri is the patron bodhisattva of students, scholars, teachers, and all who seek clarity of mind, eloquence, and the realization of emptiness. His mantra, OM AH RA PA TSA NA DHI, is the most widely recited wisdom mantra in Tibetan Buddhism.
Which Form to Choose
- Orange/Yellow Manjushri (Arapachana) → the most common form — seated on a lotus, sword raised, Prajnaparamita sutra on a lotus at the left shoulder. For wisdom practice, study, and general devotion.
- White Manjushri (Sita Manjushri) → the form emphasizing clarity and purification of mental obscurations — for practitioners seeking to clear confusion and enhance meditative insight.
- Black Manjushri (Yamantaka aspect) → the wrathful form associated with the Yamantaka cycle — for advanced practitioners with the appropriate empowerment.
- For a Three Family Protectors altar → pair with Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani thangkas for a complete wisdom-compassion-power shrine.
Features of Manjushri Thangka
Gandhanra Manjushri thangkas depict Jampalyang in his principal Arapachana form: golden-yellow body, right hand raised holding the flaming sword of wisdom (khadga), left hand in vitarka mudra holding the stem of a blue lotus on which rests the Prajnaparamita sutra, seated in vajra posture on a moon disc and lotus. Some compositions show Manjushri riding a snow lion or seated within a mandala of the Five Wisdom Buddhas. Available forms include orange Arapachana, white Sita Manjushri, and the wrathful Yamantaka-aspect. All compositions follow the Himalayan lineage iconographic canon as transmitted through Tibetan and Nepalese ateliers. Each thangka is giclee printed from a high-resolution master scan of original mineral-pigment artwork, with archival pigment inks delivering museum-grade color fidelity. Every print is hand framed in traditional silk brocade, ready to hang at a study altar or shrine.
How to Use Manjushri Thangka
Place your Manjushri thangka on a study altar, desk shrine, or wisdom altar — ideally at eye level facing the room. Recite the Manjushri mantra (OM AH RA PA TSA NA DHI) 21 or 108 times before study, writing, teaching, or meditation to invoke clarity of mind and discriminating wisdom. Students traditionally recite his mantra before examinations; scholars recite it before research and writing. For a complete Three Family Protectors shrine, pair with Avalokiteshvara (compassion) and Vajrapani (power) thangkas. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve the giclee print and silk brocade framing.
Why Choose Handmade Manjushri Thangka
Gandhanra sources Manjushri compositions from Tibetan and Nepalese ateliers with verified Himalayan lineage transmission, ensuring iconographic authenticity across all three principal forms: correct sword type and flame, Prajnaparamita sutra placement, mudra, lotus base, and color. As one of the Three Family Protectors, Manjushri’s iconographic precision is essential for correct practice use and altar pairing with Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani. Giclee printing with archival inks delivers lasting color accuracy equivalent to the original mineral-pigment and gold-line artwork. Hand framing in traditional silk brocade by skilled craftspeople means each thangka arrives altar-ready. Every piece passes a final quality check before worldwide shipping.
