Maitreya Thangka — Jampa, the Future Buddha of Loving-Kindness
Maitreya (Tibetan: Jampa, “Loving-Kindness”) is the Buddha of the future age — the fifth and coming Buddha who currently resides in Tushita Heaven, awaiting the time when the Dharma of Shakyamuni has completely faded from the world before descending to teach again. Golden-yellow and serene, he is depicted seated in the Western manner (legs pendant, feet on a lotus footrest) rather than in vajra posture — a unique iconographic feature signifying his readiness to rise and descend to earth. He holds a dharma wheel on a lotus at his right shoulder and a vase of nectar on a lotus at his left, and wears the crown and ornaments of a bodhisattva. Maitreya is invoked for the cultivation of loving-kindness (metta), the aspiration to meet his teachings in a future life, and the purification of the karma that obstructs rebirth in Tushita Heaven.
Who Should Choose a Maitreya Thangka
- For loving-kindness (metta) practice → Maitreya embodies boundless loving-kindness — his thangka supports metta meditation and the cultivation of bodhichitta.
- For Tushita aspiration practice → recite the Maitreya aspiration prayer to accumulate the merit for rebirth in Tushita Heaven and to meet Maitreya’s teachings in a future life.
- For students of the Lam Rim → Maitreya is the source of the Lam Rim lineage through Asanga — his thangka is traditionally placed at the study altar of Lam Rim practitioners.
- For a serene, luminous altar centerpiece → Maitreya’s golden, peaceful form and unique seated posture make him one of the most visually distinctive and uplifting thangka subjects in the Tibetan tradition.
Features of Maitreya Thangka
Gandhanra Maitreya thangkas depict Jampa in his canonical Tushita Heaven form: golden-yellow body adorned with bodhisattva crown and jewel ornaments, seated in the unique bhadrasana posture (legs pendant, feet resting on a lotus footrest) — the only major Tibetan Buddhist deity depicted in this seated position, signifying his readiness to descend to earth. A blue lotus at his right shoulder supports a dharma wheel (chakra); a blue lotus at his left shoulder supports a vase of nectar (kalasha). The composition follows the Himalayan Maitreya iconographic canon as transmitted through Tibetan and Nepalese lineage ateliers. Each thangka is giclee printed from a high-resolution master scan of original mineral-pigment artwork, with archival pigment inks delivering museum-grade color fidelity across the full luminosity of the golden Maitreya form. Every print is hand framed in traditional silk brocade, ready to hang at an altar or study shrine.
How to Use Maitreya Thangka
Place your Maitreya thangka on a main altar, study shrine, or dedicated future-Buddha altar — his golden, luminous form is appropriate for any position on the altar. Recite the Maitreya mantra (OM MAITRI MAHA MAITRI MAITREYA SVAHA) or the Tushita aspiration prayer to accumulate merit for rebirth in Tushita Heaven and to meet Maitreya’s future teachings. For loving-kindness (metta) meditation, use the thangka as a visualization support while reciting the metta phrases, allowing Maitreya’s boundless loving-kindness to radiate outward. For Lam Rim study, place the thangka at your study altar alongside Tsongkhapa — Maitreya is the source of the vast deeds lineage of the Lam Rim through Asanga and Atisha. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve the giclee print and silk brocade framing.
Why Choose Handmade Maitreya Thangka
Maitreya’s bhadrasana posture (legs pendant) is iconographically unique among major Tibetan Buddhist deities and must be correctly rendered — a Maitreya depicted in vajra posture is iconographically incorrect. Gandhanra sources Maitreya compositions from Tibetan and Nepalese ateliers with verified Himalayan lineage transmission, ensuring the correct bhadrasana posture, dharma wheel and nectar vase on lotus flowers, bodhisattva crown, and golden body color are accurately rendered. Giclee printing with archival inks captures the full warmth and luminosity of the golden mineral-pigment original. Hand framing in traditional silk brocade by skilled craftspeople means each thangka arrives altar-ready. Every piece passes a final quality check for iconographic accuracy and print clarity before worldwide shipping.
