Guru Rinpoche Thangka — Padmasambhava, Founder of Tibetan Buddhism

Guru Rinpoche (Sanskrit: Padmasambhava; Tibetan: Pema Jungne) is the 8th-century Indian master who brought Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet and established the Nyingma lineage. Depicted seated in royal ease, holding a vajra in his right hand and a skull cup of nectar in his left, with a khatvanga staff resting against his shoulder, his thangka is the central icon of every Nyingma altar and guru yoga practice. Revered as the “Second Buddha,” Guru Rinpoche thangkas are used for guru yoga, Vajrayana empowerments, and daily devotional practice across all Tibetan Buddhist schools.

How to Choose Your Guru Rinpoche Thangka

  • For Nyingma guru yoga practice → choose a Guru Rinpoche thangka in the classical eight-manifestation (Guru Tsen Gye) composition.
  • For a central altar icon → choose a large-format giclee print, hand framed in traditional silk brocade for a commanding altar presence.
  • For Vajrayana empowerment or retreat → choose a composition showing Guru Rinpoche with consort Yeshe Tsogyal and the full Copper-Colored Mountain assembly.
  • For gifting or a personal shrine → choose a medium-format giclee print, hand framed in silk brocade — a meaningful offering for any practitioner.
