Es wird üblicherweise von weiblichen Gottheiten gehalten, kann in der spirituellen Praxis aber auch in den Händen männlicher Gottheiten, wie beispielsweise Yamantaka, gesehen werden.
Die Kartika stellt die Trennung der beiden buddhistischen Verdunkelungen der Befleckung und des Wissens dar, die den Weg der Erleuchtung behindern.
