Tibetan Mala — the Essential Tool for Mantra Practice

A Tibetan mala (trengwa) is the practitioner’s counting tool for mantra recitation — strung with 108 beads encoding the 108 afflictions to be purified, used from daily OM MANI PADME HUM recitation to advanced ngondro accumulations. At Gandhanra, every mala is sourced directly from Tibetan and Himalayan artisan workshops: authentic materials, correct bead counts, and traditional hand-knotting.

  • 108-Bead Necklace Malas → standard practice mala for accumulation, meditation, and ceremonial use. Lotus seed, bodhi seed, yak bone, rudraksha, turquoise, coral, lapis, and more.
  • Wrist Mala Bracelets (27-bead) → portable daily-carry mala. Complete four rotations to equal one full mala of 108.
  • Mala Accessories → guru beads, spacer beads, pendant charms, bead counters, and mala clips for customizing or repairing your mala.

How to Choose Your Material

  • Lotus seed → most auspicious general-purpose mala; suitable for any deity practice.
  • Bodhi seed → associated with Shakyamuni’s enlightenment; ideal for Buddha and Bodhisattva practices.
  • Yak bone / conch → used in wrathful deity and protector practices; bone malas accumulate merit swiftly in Vajrayana contexts.
  • Rudraksha → widely used for Vajrasattva and purification practices in the Tibetan tradition.
  • Precious stone (turquoise, coral, lapis, amber) → for specific deity affinities and as offering objects of beauty and value.
