Ushnishavijaya Thangka — the Buddha of Longevity and Purification
Ushnishavijaya (Tibetan: Tsugtor Namgyalma) is one of the Three Longevity Deities of Tibetan Buddhism, alongside Amitayus and White Tara. Her name means “Victorious Crown Protrusion” — she is invoked for the purification of negative karma, the extension of life, and liberation from lower rebirths. Uniquely powerful among longevity deities, her dharani is said to purify the karma of those who merely hear it, and her thangka is traditionally commissioned for long-life pujas, birthday offerings, and the recovery of the seriously ill.
Who Should Choose an Ushnishavijaya Thangka
- For long-life or purification practice → Ushnishavijaya is the most powerful of the Three Longevity Deities for karmic purification — ideal for serious longevity sadhana.
- As a birthday or recovery offering → traditionally commissioned to extend the life of an elder, a teacher, or someone recovering from serious illness.
- For a Three Longevity Deities altar → pair with Amitayus and White Tara thangkas for a complete longevity shrine.
- For collectors of rare multi-armed deity iconography → her three-faced, eight-armed form is one of the most iconographically complex and visually striking in the Tibetan canon.
Features of Ushnishavijaya Thangka
Gandhanra Ushnishavijaya thangkas depict Tsugtor Namgyalma in her classical three-faced, eight-armed white form: central face white and serene, right face yellow, left face blue, seated in vajra posture within a stupa arch. Her eight hands hold the double vajra, arrow, lotus with Amitabha, lasso, bow, vessel of nectar, and gesture of fearlessness. The composition follows the Tibetan longevity deity iconographic canon as transmitted through Himalayan lineage ateliers. Each thangka is giclee printed from a high-resolution master scan of original mineral-pigment artwork, with archival pigment inks delivering museum-grade color fidelity. Every print is hand framed in traditional silk brocade, ready to hang at a longevity shrine.
How to Use Ushnishavijaya Thangka
Place your Ushnishavijaya thangka on a longevity altar or dedicated purification shrine, elevated and facing the room. Recite the Ushnishavijaya dharani (the long mantra beginning NAMO BHAGAVATE...) or the short mantra (OM BHRUM SVAHA / OM AMRITA AYURDADE SVAHA) 21 or 108 times daily for karmic purification and life extension. This practice is especially recommended for those who have received a life-obstacle reading, are recovering from serious illness, or wish to dedicate merit for an elder or teacher. For a complete Three Longevity Deities shrine, pair with Amitayus and White Tara thangkas. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve the giclee print and silk brocade framing.
Why Choose Handmade Ushnishavijaya Thangka
Ushnishavijaya is among the rarer and more iconographically demanding subjects in the thangka market — her three-faced, eight-armed form requires precise attribute placement and color accuracy to be ritually valid. Gandhanra sources compositions from Himalayan lineage ateliers with verified iconographic fidelity: correct face colors, hand attributes, stupa arch, and proportional canon. Giclee printing with archival inks ensures lasting color accuracy equivalent to the original mineral-pigment artwork. Hand framing in traditional silk brocade by skilled craftspeople means each thangka arrives altar-ready. Every piece passes a final quality check before worldwide shipping.
