Tsongkhapa Thangka — Je Rinpoche, Founder of the Gelug Tradition
Tsongkhapa Lobzang Drakpa (Tibetan: Je Rinpoche, 1357–1419) is the greatest scholar-practitioner in Tibetan Buddhist history — the founder of the Gelug school, author of the Lam Rim Chenmo (Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path), and the reformer who restored the purity of monastic discipline and tantric practice in Tibet. Depicted in the iconic form of a monk in yellow hat and robes, seated on a lotus throne, with a sword of wisdom and a Prajnaparamita sutra on lotus flowers at his shoulders, he is venerated as an emanation of Manjushri — the Bodhisattva of Wisdom — in human form. A Tsongkhapa thangka is the central icon of every Gelug monastery and the most important guru thangka for Gelug practitioners worldwide.
Who Should Choose a Tsongkhapa Thangka
- Gelug practitioners → Tsongkhapa is the root guru of the Gelug lineage — his thangka is essential for any Gelug altar, guru yoga practice, and the Ganden Lha Gyema (Offering to the Guru) puja.
- Students of the Lam Rim → place his thangka at your study altar when studying the Lam Rim Chenmo, Madhyamaka, or any of his major works.
- For Migtsema mantra practice → Tsongkhapa’s thangka is the visualization support for the Migtsema prayer — the most widely recited Gelug guru mantra, invoking him as the embodiment of Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, and Vajrapani.
- Collectors of Tibetan Buddhist master portraits → Tsongkhapa’s iconography is among the most refined and consistent in the Tibetan tradition, with a distinctive yellow Gelug hat and precise attribute placement.
Features of Tsongkhapa Thangka
Gandhanra Tsongkhapa thangkas depict Je Rinpoche in his canonical form: yellow Gelug pandit hat, saffron and maroon monk’s robes, seated in vajra posture on a moon disc and lotus throne, right hand in vitarka mudra at the heart, left hand in dhyana mudra at the lap. A blue lotus at his right shoulder supports the flaming sword of wisdom (identifying him as an emanation of Manjushri); a blue lotus at his left shoulder supports the Prajnaparamita sutra. Some compositions show him flanked by his two principal disciples, Gyaltsab Je and Khedrup Je, forming the Tsongkhapa with Two Disciples triad. The composition follows the Gelug guru portrait iconographic canon as transmitted through Tibetan and Nepalese Himalayan lineage ateliers. Each thangka is giclee printed from a high-resolution master scan of original mineral-pigment artwork, with archival pigment inks delivering museum-grade color fidelity. Every print is hand framed in traditional silk brocade, ready to hang at a Gelug altar or study shrine.
How to Use Tsongkhapa Thangka
Place your Tsongkhapa thangka at the center or upper position of a Gelug altar, above or alongside the main Buddha thangka, as the guru is considered the root of all blessings in the Vajrayana tradition. Recite the Migtsema prayer (MIKTSE MA) — the quintessential Tsongkhapa guru mantra invoking him as the embodiment of Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, and Vajrapani — 21 or 108 times daily as guru yoga practice. Perform the Ganden Lha Gyema (Offering to the Guru from Ganden) puja on the 25th of each Tibetan lunar month, Tsongkhapa’s parinirvana day (Ganden Ngamchoe), with butter lamp offerings. For Lam Rim study, place the thangka at your study altar and recite the Migtsema before each session. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve the giclee print and silk brocade framing.
Why Choose Handmade Tsongkhapa Thangka
Tsongkhapa’s portrait iconography is among the most precisely codified in the Tibetan tradition — the yellow Gelug hat, sword and sutra on lotus flowers, vitarka mudra, and the optional two-disciples triad must be correctly rendered for the image to be ritually valid as a guru yoga support. Gandhanra sources Tsongkhapa compositions from Tibetan and Nepalese ateliers with documented Gelug lineage transmission, ensuring full iconographic authenticity: correct hat form, robe colors, attribute placement, mudra, and lotus throne. Giclee printing with archival inks delivers lasting color accuracy equivalent to the original mineral-pigment and gold-line artwork. Hand framing in traditional silk brocade by skilled craftspeople means each thangka arrives altar-ready. Every piece passes a final quality check for iconographic accuracy and print clarity before worldwide shipping.
