In indigenous beliefs, metal artifacts were thought to possess an intrinsic vitality and functioned as ritual intermediaries. Some craft treatises metaphorically link copper to yin and iron to yang—with gold left out—thereby implying a social symbolism. Tibetan descriptions, meanwhile, tend to set apart copper/alloy-cast ritual objects and iron-forged weapons, although this distinction is not absolute.
