Tsongkhapa Thangka — Je Rinpoche, Founder of the Gelug Tradition

Tsongkhapa Lobzang Drakpa (Tibetan: Je Rinpoche, 1357–1419) is the greatest scholar-practitioner in Tibetan Buddhist history — the founder of the Gelug school, author of the Lam Rim Chenmo (Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path), and the reformer who restored the purity of monastic discipline and tantric practice in Tibet. Depicted in the iconic form of a monk in yellow hat and robes, seated on a lotus throne, with a sword of wisdom and a Prajnaparamita sutra on lotus flowers at his shoulders, he is venerated as an emanation of Manjushri — the Bodhisattva of Wisdom — in human form. A Tsongkhapa thangka is the central icon of every Gelug monastery and the most important guru thangka for Gelug practitioners worldwide.
