Amitabha Thangka — Opagme, the Buddha of Infinite Light
Amitabha (Tibetan: Opagme, “Infinite Light”) is the Buddha of the Western Pure Land — Dewachen, the Blissful Realm — and the most widely venerated Buddha in the Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. Dressed in simple monk’s robes of deep red, seated in vajra posture with hands in dhyana mudra holding a begging bowl, he embodies the boundless compassion and merit that welcomes all beings into his Pure Land at the moment of death. Amitabha practice — mantra recitation, aspiration prayer, and phowa (consciousness transference) — is the most accessible path to liberation in the Tibetan tradition, open to practitioners of all levels.
Who Should Choose an Amitabha Thangka
- For Pure Land aspiration practice → Amitabha’s thangka is the central icon for daily mantra recitation (OM AMI DEWA HRI) and aspiration prayer for rebirth in Dewachen.
- For phowa (consciousness transference) practice → Amitabha is the principal deity of phowa — the Vajrayana practice of directing consciousness to the Pure Land at the moment of death.
- As a memorial or end-of-life offering → traditionally placed at the bedside of the dying or offered in memory of the deceased to support their rebirth in Dewachen.
- For a Western Pure Land altar → pair with Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta (or Vajrapani) thangkas for a complete Amitabha triad shrine.
Features of Amitabha Thangka
Gandhanra Amitabha thangkas depict Opagme in his canonical Dharmakaya form: deep red body wearing simple monk’s robes (as distinct from the Sambhogakaya ornaments of Amitayus), seated in vajra posture on a moon disc and lotus, both hands in dhyana mudra at the lap holding a black begging bowl (patra). The composition follows the Pure Land iconographic canon as transmitted through Tibetan and Nepalese Himalayan lineage ateliers, often showing Amitabha flanked by Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta, or set within the Dewachen Pure Land landscape. Each thangka is giclee printed from a high-resolution master scan of original mineral-pigment artwork, with archival pigment inks delivering museum-grade color fidelity. Every print is hand framed in traditional silk brocade, ready to hang at a Pure Land altar or memorial shrine.
How to Use Amitabha Thangka
Place your Amitabha thangka on a Pure Land altar facing west — the direction of Dewachen — or on the main altar facing the room. Recite the Amitabha mantra (OM AMI DEWA HRI) or the long Amitabha mantra 21 or 108 times daily as aspiration practice for rebirth in the Pure Land. For phowa practice, use the thangka as the visualization support for Amitabha above the crown of the head. For memorial practice, place the thangka at the bedside of the dying or at a memorial altar, reciting the mantra and aspiration prayer (Dedzog) to support the consciousness of the deceased. Note: Amitabha (monk’s robes, begging bowl, Dharmakaya form) and Amitayus (jewel ornaments, longevity vase, Sambhogakaya form) are the same Buddha in different aspects — choose Amitabha for Pure Land and phowa practice, Amitayus for long-life practice. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve the giclee print and silk brocade framing.
Why Choose Handmade Amitabha Thangka
Amitabha and Amitayus are iconographically distinct despite being the same Buddha: Amitabha wears simple monk’s robes and holds a begging bowl (Dharmakaya form for Pure Land practice), while Amitayus wears the thirteen Sambhogakaya ornaments and holds a longevity vase (for long-life practice). Correct iconographic distinction is essential for ritual validity. Gandhanra sources Amitabha compositions from Tibetan and Nepalese ateliers with verified Pure Land lineage transmission, ensuring the correct robe form, begging bowl, dhyana mudra, and lotus base are accurately rendered. Giclee printing with archival inks captures the full depth and warmth of the red mineral-pigment original. Hand framing in traditional silk brocade by skilled craftspeople means each thangka arrives altar-ready. Every piece passes a final quality check before worldwide shipping.
