About Phum Dzi
This category features ancient Phum dZi (say it like Püm with the H being silent). Beads are typically decorated with the longevity or net design. The word Phum probably derives from the Tibetan word for vase, which may also be spelt Büm (as in Bümpa). A ritual vase (Tib:gtso-bum) is used to confer Vajrayana empowerments and represents the mandala of the deity. The long life or nectar vase (Tib: tshe bum) is believed to bestow longevity. Phum dZi are usually fat beads with a grey to black base colour. They can also vary greatly in quality and size. Many Tibetans believe they are the oldest of all the dZi beads found in Tibet. Some rare Phum dZi may even include eyes and other motifs
Dzi bead (Tib. གཟི།; pronounced "zee"; alternative spelling: gzi) is a type of stone bead of uncertain origin worn as part of a necklace and sometimes as a bracelet. In several Asian cultures, including that of Tibet, the bead is considered to provide positive spiritual benefit.
The meaning of the Tibetan word "Dzi" translates to "shine, brightness, clearness, splendour". The beads originate in the Tibetan cultural sphere and can command high prices and are difficult to come by. They are found primarily in Tibet, but also in neighbouring Bhutan, Ladakh and Sikkim. Shepherds and farmers pick them up in the grasslands or while cultivating fields. Because dZi are found in the earth, Tibetans cannot conceive of them as man-made. Since knowledge of the bead is derived from oral traditions, few beads have provoked more controversy concerning their source, method of manufacture and even precise definition. This all contributes to making them the most sought after and collectable beads on earth.
In Tibetan culture these beads are generally prized as protective amulets, these beads are believed to attract local protectors, dharmapalas or deities or maybe beneficial ghosts, ancestors or even bodhisattvas. Because of this, dzi beads are always treated with respect.
The most highly prized dzi beads are those of ancient age, made of natural agate. The original source of these beads is a mystery. While the traditional, ancient-style beads are greatly preferred, new modern-made dzi are gaining popularity among Tibetans.
Dzi beads are made from agate, and may have decorative symbols composed of circles, ovals, squares, waves or zig zags, stripes, lines, diamonds, dots, and various other archetypal and symbolic patterns. Colors mainly range from brown to black, with the pattern usually in ivory white. Dzi beads can appear in different colours, shapes, and sizes; the surface is usually smooth and waxy, presumably resulting from wear over a long period of time.
In Tibetan Buddhist culture Dzi bead is considered to be the best and most powerful amulet that can help bless and protect its owner.
Dzi beads are precious jewelry from Tibetan culture which are believed to possess the power of bringing good fortune to the owners, such as protection from ill luck, attracting wealth and prosperity, fostering good health and warding against evil.
The Nine Eye Motif is the King of all Motifs. It is believed to be the most powerful of all dzi beads.
Dzi stones are said to do a number of things. Some protect its wearer from negative energies or accidents, some attract wealth or wisdom, while others might bring you love and happiness.
One thing to remember concerning these curious little stones is this, a Dzi stone may repel things, but it also can store them. When negativism comes at you, your stone may block it or absorb it. They can also give very positive energies to you while absorbing a bit of your energy in the process. In other words, a bit of them goes into you and a bit of you will go into them.
