Yet this encounter ran far deeper than is commonly supposed: it began over three centuries ago with Tibetan scholars absorbing Western calendrical calculations, and later gained momentum through the Qing court’s gifts of clocks and timepieces.

In the winter of 1653, the Fifth Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, was making his way along the official road to Beijing, as recounted under the heading 'Jesuits and Tibetan Calendrical Calculations.' Huang Mingxin, a scholar, observed that the *Datong Calendar*, which remained in use throughout the Ming dynasty, had become increasingly erroneous, thereby undermining the credibility of imperial rites and astronomical judgments. At that moment, however, the monastic authorities had not yet recognized that this "new Western method," so adept at predicting celestial phenomena, would gradually and circuitously penetrate the intellectual landscape of the snow-covered plateau. How, then, did the Jesuit calendar secure its place on the official stage of the Qing Empire?

Johann Adam Schall von Bell led a group of missionaries whose solution, grounded in Tycho Brahe’s precise astronomical system, proved more accurate. The *Shixian Calendar* compiled by them was adopted by the Qing court in 1645. This adoption served both to “revere heaven and determine the seasons” and to consolidate the authority of calendar reform as a symbol of the new dynasty’s legitimacy. The widest dissemination of this knowledge, however, began only in 1714.

The Tibetan translation project, completed under the direction of the Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, produced the *Tibetan Translation of the Kangxi Emperor's Comprehensive Chinese Calendar*. This effort began with Emperor Kangxi's decree that the astronomical treatise *Lüli Yuanyuan*, which incorporated the Tychonic system, be translated first into Mongolian. During this trip, an imperial courier sent by the Qianlong Emperor swiftly delivered to him a gold watch, along with a letter expressing reverence. European clocks, meanwhile, had entered Tibet during the 18th century through two channels: the Mongol-Russian trade routes and imperial gifts from the Qing court.

European clocks did more than introduce novel artifacts; they prompted a conceptual transformation within Tibetan scholarly circles. Upon his arrival in Rehe, he was presented with a finely crafted "striking clock," yet the most symbolically significant gift was a custom-built "Kalachakra clock." Constructed by Jesuit artisans at the imperial court in accordance with the *Kalachakra Tantra* system, it divided the entire span of day and night into sixty periods, thereby fusing Tibetan Buddhist cosmology with European mechanical craftsmanship.

Sumba Yéshé Paljor, an Amdo scholar, recorded in his works that he employed a "Beijing-crafted Western clock" for astronomical computations. The astronomer A-ja Lobsang Tanpai Gyaltsen, in turn, highlighted major flaws in traditional sundials and urged that "one must observe day and night using clocks to achieve precision." These efforts signaled the initial integration of mechanical timekeeping into Tibetan scholars' systems of scientific observation.

At Kalimpong, a border town between British India and Tibet, the Tibetan Christian intellectual Dorje Tarchin founded one of the world's earliest Tibetan-language newspapers in 1925, using a discarded mimeograph machine. The publication, titled "Mirror" (meaning "mirror"), displayed dual calendars side by side: the Gregorian calendar, labeled "དབྱིན་ཟླ" (English time), was printed together with Tibetan calendar dates.

The newspaper's coverage, spanning global current events and indigenous reformist ideas, simultaneously mirrored the outside world and turned a critical eye inward. Furthermore, Gendün Chöphel's pieces in the periodical, which challenged established cosmological notions, further provoked public intellectual discourse.

Tibetan society's adoption of modern timekeeping was a significant cultural adjustment, progressing from passive exposure to deliberate integration and from royal treasures to public media. This transformation is demonstrated by the exact snow prediction made outside the Fifth Dalai Lama's tent, the clock of the Sixth Panchen Lama that incorporated the insights of the *Kalachakra Tantra*, and the paired calendars displayed together in the masthead of the *Mirror* newspaper.
