Amitabha Thangka — Opagme, the Buddha of Infinite Light

Amitabha (Tibetan: Opagme, “Infinite Light”) is the Buddha of the Western Pure Land — Dewachen, the Blissful Realm — and the most widely venerated Buddha in the Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. Dressed in simple monk’s robes of deep red, seated in vajra posture with hands in dhyana mudra holding a begging bowl, he embodies the boundless compassion and merit that welcomes all beings into his Pure Land at the moment of death. Amitabha practice — mantra recitation, aspiration prayer, and phowa (consciousness transference) — is the most accessible path to liberation in the Tibetan tradition, open to practitioners of all levels.

Who Should Choose an Amitabha Thangka

• For Pure Land aspiration practice → Amitabha’s thangka is the central icon for daily mantra recitation (OM AMI DEWA HRI) and aspiration prayer for rebirth in Dewachen.
• For phowa (consciousness transference) practice → Amitabha is the principal deity of phowa — the Vajrayana practice of directing consciousness to the Pure Land at the moment of death.
• As a memorial or end-of-life offering → traditionally placed at the bedside of the dying or offered in memory of the deceased to support their rebirth in Dewachen.
