Seals of Power: A Brass Vajra Knot Keychain for Safeguarding Home
The historical records do not contain any information about the origins of ancient seals in Tibet. Following the unification of Tibet by Tubo in the 7th century AD, which brought a vast territory under its control, numerous documents confirm that these seals were employed for issuing orders and commands. The seals that have survived to the present day are characterized by a grand and unadorned aesthetic, serving as silent testimonies to bygone eras. Beyond representing the concept of "all," the seals' symbolism also embodies a pledge of trust and commitment.
We are attempting to breathe new life into an ancient seal, which we have named 'Heart Seal'. The seal button pattern 'Face of Glory' (Kritimukha) is called 'Ziba' in the Tibetan area and 'Tapini Beast' in Chinese. It is a creature with sharp antennae, prominent eyes, and a large mouth. In Sanskrit, 'Kriti' means 'honor' and 'Mukha' means 'mask'. Its dual meaning encompasses protection of the home and attraction of wealth, acting as a protective deity.
The earliest recorded reference to the Face of Glory appears in the Indian Hindu text "Shiva Purana," after which it was incorporated into both Hindu Tantra and Buddhist Tantra. Its meaning, connected to the defeat of demons and the bringing of good fortune, has endured into modern times. There are two categories: "Embrace all things" and a second type involving flying birds that come back carrying mountains. Genuine calm of the mind is not something one is born with; it comes from a mind that is self-sufficient and unaffected by outside conditions. If inner peace is absent, outer peace cannot exist. Attachment is released only when one embraces everything.
In 1253 AD, Kublai Khan summoned "Bajsibabe Script" Type Bajsibabe—the fifth generation ancestor of the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism—to confer Buddhist precepts on Kublai Khan, his wife, and twenty-five others. The seal markings themselves consist of a handmade yellow cord Vajra knot combined with Tibetan script reading "སེམས" (meaning "heart, heart nature"), the Chinese character for "heart," and a pattern of birds returning to the mountains.
He was honored with the title of "national preceptor" and placed in charge of the Central Plains, overseeing the religious doctrines across the entire realm.
The seal bears the Tibetan characters "སེམས," which signify "heart" or "mind." In the Yuan Dynasty, Bajsibabe was assigned to devise a new Mongolian script grounded in ancient Tibetan, formally adopted in 1269 under the labels "Mongolian New Script" or "Mongolian Script," and widely known as the "Bajsibabe Script." From that time forward, most official correspondence sent from the Tibetan region—intended to foster connections with the outside world—was written in the Bajsibabe Script.
A handcrafted indigo-colored cord and a Vajra knot are paired with the keychain. The Vajra knot is hand-knitted using yellow and blue jade threads, with the aim of reducing obstacles and bringing good fortune. Product information: the Tibetan script on one side of the keychain translates to “the path to personal liberation” in English, while the other side is engraved with the words “THE PATH OF INDIVIDUAL LIBERATION.”
