Tibet Seventy Years Ago: The Outline of a Lost Era

Numerous valuable images were taken by them during the early 1900s, with many appearing in globally recognized publications such as *National Geographic* and *Life*.
Tsarong Dazang Damcho was taking photographs in 1944. In 1901, Cui Bikof photographed the Potala Palace. Among the local photographers were De Mu Hu Tu Ku Tu of the 10th generation, Jemem Sonam Wangbu, and the father-son duo of Tsarong Dasang Jandui, among others. Tsarang Dzasang Zhandui photographed the servants of the Tsar family in 1941.
Professional news photographers first began leaving their mark in Tibet during the 1950s, after Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, and a range of regional newspapers were established and went to press. One such photographer was Chen Zonglie, affiliated with the Tibet Daily (1956) in Lhasa. Our narrative is always centered on Lhasa, an ancient city also called the City of Good Fortune（དཔལ་གྱི་ཆོས་འཁོར་ལྷ་ས།）. Serving as the primary hub of the former Tibetan region, Lhasa is surrounded and sustained by the valley's moist monsoon breezes.
From this, a unique urban culture and tradition has arisen. Lhasa City contains the Potala Palace and Norbulingka Palace. The small river depicted originates in the eastern part of Lhasa, goes south through the city, passes beneath Lulupu Bridge, continues before the Potala Palace, follows the contours of Medicine King Mountain, and finally flows gently into the Lhasa River on the western edge of Lhasa.
The route that connects the Potala Palace with the Norbulingka Palace goes past Menzikang (Medical Billing Department). Yaowang Mountain, Lizhong Tibetan Hospital, and Dragon King Pool are located in the vicinity. From the South Street of Barkhor Street, Jokhang Temple can be seen at a distance; a closer look reveals the temple along with the Tang Willow (ཇོ་བོ་དབུ་སྐྲ།) and the Golden Roof of its 'Dharma King Hall'.
At Lobrinca stands the boat palace (གྲུ་འཛིན་ཕོ་བྲང་།), known as Roblanka Tiancheng Garden. Although this palace, which carries a strong Han Dynasty garden character, is always referred to by us as "Lake Heart Palace" (མཚོ་དཀྱིལ་ཕོ་བྲང་། 措吉颇章), its official name is "Heavenly Garden" (ལྷུན་གྲུབ་དགའ་ཚལ། 伦珠噶采).
Patzhuk Situ Strong Dzambhain Zang (སི་ཏུ་བྱང་ཆུབ་རྒྱལ་མཚན།) founded this monastery, and the most heartfelt aspiration, "May all wishes be fulfilled" (བསམ་པའི་དོན་ལྷུན་གྱིས་གྲུབ་པ།), became part of its name. Over the course of more than seven hundred years, it has sustained the Tibetan land just as Situ's aspiration implies. Along the Lhasa River, gardens stretch beside sights such as the Philosopher Temple, Sala Temple, Gandan Monastery, and Lhasa Bridge. In Shigatse, one can observe Sangzuzi Zongbao, Zhashenlunbu Monastery, and Zhashilunbu Monastery, both in close-up and from afar. Further sights include the pagoda at Zhashunlunbu Temple, the Coqen Hall and outer courtyard of Zhashenlunbu Temple, as well as that temple's murals depicting the Offering to Celestial Maidens and the Six Longevities. The statue of Shakyamuni Buddha is found in Zhaibutsunb Monastery.
Jiangzi, also referred to as the "Crystal City" (ཤེལ་དཀར་རྒྱལ་རྩེ།), ranks among Tibet's four principal commercial towns. It was likewise a frontier where Tibet came into contact with outside civilizations. Upon beholding the magnificent stupa of Palkhor Monastery, travelers realize that the fatigue and difficulties of their journey were justified. Moreover, outsiders such as Daz, Ronghepeng, and Tuqi have also left enduring recollections here.
The fortress of Jiangzi Zong was reduced to rubble by shelling from the British-Indian expeditionary forces. Seen from a distance, the Baiju Temple and its Yixiang Dumen Pagoda rise in view, offering a place that feels both known and strange.
