The 1980s Fashion Show: Tibetan Street Style on Film
Hustle and Bustle is a work by Alain Le Garsmeur, a documentary photographer born in France in 1943. After studying at Ealing Art College in London, he worked as an assistant to well-known photographers including Helmut Newton, Donald Silverstein, and Guy Bourdin. Since 1970 he has been a freelancer, traveling worldwide and taking many photographs. His work has been featured in The Observer, National Geographic, Newsweek, and other outlets.
Between the late 1970s and the 1980s, Alain first visited China, passing through Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Harbin. His photography is documentary in character, focusing on the most common moments of daily existence. His body of work pulses with the vibrant spirit of human activity. In January 1985, he captured an image in Fushun, Liaoning, China. Through his camera, he presented the most truthful and unembellished views of that generation, highlighting the active lives of all those who lived and worked peacefully.
While shooting in China, Alain made his first visit to Tibet. Against the snow-covered plateau with Lhasa at its heart, he captured everyday street scenes of Tibetan residents—people resting beneath the Potala Palace, heading to temples to worship, and walking or cycling along Barkhor Street. One of his photographs, showing a long row of houses with curious onlookers gazing at the photographer, earned him first prize in the "Daily Life" category of the World Press Photo Awards in 1986.
Over four decades of transformation in Tibet, the daily existence of nomads, the routines of monastic life, and the journeys of pilgrims have all shifted. The landscapes endure, and the people are no longer what they once were, yet one unchanging core persists: the deep, quiet stillness of this immense region.
