Peach Blossoms in Pink and White: The Romantic Allure of Tibetan Culture
People discussing the 7th Samding Dorje Pakmo (Tibetan: བསམ་སྡིངས་རྡོ་རྗེ་ཕག་མོ་༠༧ཆོས་སྒྲོན་དབང་མོ་, 1708–1753) often tell the legend of “the female monastery master manifesting as a wrathful wild boar”. In this tale, the monastery’s female master took the form of a fierce boar wrapped in flames, and the soldiers preparing to raid Samding Monastery trembled with fear at the sight. This episode is regarded as evidence that the successive Samding Jetsünmas are none other than emanations of Vajravārāhī (the Diamond Sow, or Vajravarahi).
Perceiving Lake Yamdrok's islands as the Five Wisdom Dakinis and its sacred, many-hued waters as Vajravārāhī's mandala, the "accomplished mistress of many attainments" imparted teachings along the lake's shore during her earthly life. The merging of the five primary colors gave rise to secondary ones, so the lake's surface shone with perpetually shifting radiance.
Throughout Tibetan art, pink is used to paint clouds, sacred lotuses, blossoms, ripened fruits, silk robes, and divine aureoles. White-and-pink peaches are attributes held by Han Buddhist monks, sometimes depicted alongside pomegranates symbolizing 'fertility' and 'sacred youth'. In classical Tibetan color symbolism, pink is often likened to bhikṣuṇī: "The immaculate pink: untainted clarity, yin-principled yet radiant with sentience." The color terms include peach, pink, flesh-red, blood-red, the color of flames, pale-red, pink-red, and the hue of fruit.
In Tibetan culture, peaches commonly represent longevity, good fortune, and prosperity. In paintings, pure white, yellow, or pink-white peaches correspond to different scenes and endeavors. Yet the wild peaches native to Tibet were never these hues—their ripe green fruits showed only a faint pink glow. When the peach trees bloom, the villages are awash in pink-white splendor. This artistic characteristic is mainly associated with Central Plains traditions.
In Nyingchi, the beauty of peach blossoms and the taste of their fruit are celebrated in local folk songs, with lines such as "Sweet to taste are the peaches, fair to see are the blooms" and "Want fresh fruit?" Meanwhile, in Lhoka, peaches carry a symbolic meaning of abundant harvests and play a role in sang offerings. The Ngari region similarly includes peaches and apricots in its sang rituals. From the 1st Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival in 2003 through this year’s 22nd edition, "Nyingchi Peach Blossoms" has become a tourism brand recognized worldwide. Every March to April, crowds of travelers gather to witness the spectacle. As the verse puts it, "Simply plant the seeds" and "Flowers like fair maidens, ripe fruits for sweethearts"—this lovely pink, stretching from sacred Yamdrok to Kongpo’s peach orchards, delights both gods and mortals. Nyingchi's scenery is unlike that of Jiangnan, marked by a distinctiveness found nowhere else. As pink-white petals descend like robes, they seem to summon the goddess, while the multicolored lake releases its enigmatic breath, gently calming all living things with a soft grace.
